The story[]
Chapter 1[]
It was a normal day for Sophie. If you call normal stressing out if Keefe would ever wake up again and pacing in the Healing Center.
"Are you sure you can... .fix him?" Sophie asked Elwin. The words didn't feel right on her tongue.
"Sophie, you've asked me that question 5 times in the last three minutes. Calm down."Elwin said, making another green ball of light appear over Keefe.
Keefe. He looked so...lifeless. His ice-blue eyes, motionless, staring up at the ceiling. His pale face frozen in the same motion. He looked trapped. He honestly looked like a dead body.
Lord Cassius sat on a cot across from Keefe, staring at his son. Sophie wondered how he felt. Staring at his almost-dead only son right after being told that his wife was the one that did this to him. He looked deathly pale.
"Keefe!" Fitz yelled, running into the room with Biana, Tam, Linh, and Dex.
"No!" Biana said, frozen, staring at his body on the cot "Is he. . ."
"Not yet," Elwin said, adjusting his odd glasses "Sophie, could you see what his mind is like?"
"Sure." Sophie said "I'll do anything that can help."
And so she put her hands on his temples and listened. And looked. And listened some more. But she heard nothing. Even when she looked as far as she could go, nothing. The sadness and despair dragged her out of Keefe's mind and brought back a tiny bit of the echos.
The monster was back.
And there were no calming winds to stop it.
Chapter 2[]
Sophie let out a sob.
"No... " She said, tears falling down her cheeks "There's nothing. I can't hear anything."
"Try again!" Lord Cassius said, standing up suddenly "I will NOT let my son go like this. No. He can't!"
He put his face in his hands, sitting down again.
Is it just me or is Lord Cassius acting really sentimental?
Sophie tried not to jump as Fitz's accented voice filled her head.
Well, I guess almost losing a son can really change someone. Even Lord Cassius.
See, that's what I like about you, Sophie. You always think on the bright side.
Fitz draped an arm around Sophie and Sophie leaned into it, needing the support. She felt more tears stream down her cheeks, but Lord Cassius was right. Keefe couldn't go like that. Not now.
Sophie walked over to Keefe's cot where she put her hands on Keefe's temples. She searched through every nook and cranny of his mind, searching for something, anything.
Then she looked in the very back, the blackest and most broken part of Keefe's mind, where they were shards of forgotten memories and Sophie could barely see. But she kept on looking.
"Keefe!" Sophie transmitted "Keefe, wake up! Your friends need you! We need you! I need you."
The last part of the transmit made something stir in the back of Keefe's mind.
"help. . ." A small voice cried
Sophie grabbed the voice (Mentally, of course) and brought it to the front of Keefe's mind. She put all of her strength into him and willed him to just wake up.
When Sophie had been pouring out her energy into him for at least three hours (Real time: 5 minutes) he began to stir. Sophie saw some of the broken pieces heal and some of the darkness go away. She hoped with all her might that he wold wake up.
"Please, Keefe." She whispered "Please."
Then his eyes opened.
Chapter 3[]
"Foster?..." Keefe said softly.
'Keefe!" Biana yelled, running to the cot. "I thought I had lost you! I thought you were..."
She seemed to pause as she realized she was talking about Keefe dying.
"Eh, someone's gotta keep up with Foster's near-death records." Keefe joked wearily "We can't have her getting too full of herself."
"This isn't a laughing matter, Keefe." Lord Cassius said, walking towards his son. "You could have died! I could have never seen you again!"
"Like you would have cared." Keefe spat, angry.
"Okay, everyone step away from the cot." Elwin interfered before an argument began. "Keefe needs his rest. Everybody out."
"Fine," Sophie muttered as she walked out. She really didn't want to leave him there, all alone with Elwin as his only company. (Not that she didn't like Elwin, but it got really boring in there.)
She leaped home to find, and oddly enough, a concerned Grady and Edaline.
"Is he okay?" Edaline asked.
"Yeah. It's only been a day since...you know...and he's making a tremendous recovery." Sophie said, quoting Elwin when he had pushed them out the door.
"I knew That Boy was up to no good..." Grady grumbled, sitting next to Sophie.
"His name is Keefe." Edaline corrected. "You're going to have to get to know that soon if things work out the way I think they will."
Sophie didn't like the sly look Edaline was giving her. She didn't even know Edaline could make that face.
"I'm going to go upstairs to feed Iggy," Sophie said, walking away as fast as possible.
Edaline didn't think that she liked Keefe? Right? Of course not! Sophie liked Fitz. After all, he was the one who found her and changed her world.
She pondered the idea as she gave Iggy his dinner. She liked Fitz. Right?
Sophie couldn't sleep. The images of Keefe lying there on the cot, deathly pale kept popping up in her head. She decided to risk it to contact him
[]
Keefe? You there?
Foster? Is that you? Finally! Some company!
What do you mean 'Some Company'? Isn't Elwin there?
Yeah, but he's conked out and snoring louder than my dad. That's saying something.
You good? What happened when you were...asleep?
Sophie had to stop herself from saying "In a coma."
Ah, nothing much.
Sophie didn't fall for it.
Keefe, what did you see?
Foster, I gotta go. Bye.
Keefe, what happened?
Goodbye.
He tried to block his thoughts from Sophie, and Sophie finally relented.
She sighed as she opened her eyes again, only to find pitch black darkness again. What was wrong with Keefe? Why did act so weird? She tried to put it out of her head as she tried to fall asleep again.
CHAPTER FIVE[]
Keefe's POV
He had to do it. It wasn't his fault. She had done it.
Keefe's thoughts raced as he sat up in his cot.
She was the one who did it. He wasn't going to let her get away with it. But she seemed so...Naive.
She must be a really good liar. Keefe assured himself as he laid back down in the cot.
It will all be okay when he revealed their secret.
But something didn't feel right. But it had to be. Why would his mother put him in a coma for any other reason? She was trying to protect him. From them. The ones who took it all away from him
The ones who ruined it all Keefe thought bitterly as replayed what he had learned in the coma.
His mother, explaining it all. His whole life. A lie.
Her proof.
Keefe settled into his cot, thinking of what would happen when he stopped them.
It would be perfect.
